High Cross Cadets Drum & Bugle Corps to make IMG debut in the Forest of Dean Show

News dal sito DCE - Mar, 29/11/2016 - 11:38

The High Cross Cadets is the brainchild of former Somerford Sound Corps Director Mike Horlock, to recreate the Drum Corps activity in Christchurch, Dorset, England.

Membership of High Cross Cadets is drawn from all 3 of Christchurch's Drum & Bugle Corps: Somerford Sound, Freelancers and Splitz Show Corps, as well as musicians from other Bands in the area and members who are completely new to Marching Music.

The idea of the new Corps evolved after several years of DCUK, DCE and DCI trips, but it was a trip to the 2015 DCI Soundsport event in Bristol that kick started the Christchurch Mini Corps movement. After a few initial meetings, it was decided that High Cross Cadets would perform under the Soundsport and Mini Corps UK banners.

The show for 2017 is entitled "Return" which features both brass and drum lines. Framing the whole show is a traditional Colour Guard utilising flags and rifles mixed with modern dance ideas.

High Cross Cadets are delighted to announce that they will march in competition in 2017, which will be the first time a Drum Corps from Christchurch has competed since 2001, and will make their IMG debut at the Forest of Dean Show in Lydney Gloucestershire on Saturday 8th April 2017.

The Corps would like to thank the Blue Barons Mini Corps for help with the Bugles, Lee Court of UK Fan Network for donating the Drums, High Cross Church in Somerford for the Rehearsal Facility and Kidsgrove Scouts for the provision of Guard Equipment.

Thurrock Marching Brass brings IMG SoundSport to Essex in 2017

News dal sito DCE - Mer, 16/11/2016 - 07:59
After a successful first experience in the IMG SoundSport in 2016, Thurrock Marching Brass has announced that it will be bringing the series to Essex in 2017 with a show in Basildon on Saturday 6 May 2017.  This will see an event back in the heart of what was once a hot spot for drum and bugle corps in the UK. Thurrock aim to provide a new stop on the circuit to showcase existing and new talent, where different types of performances come together in a friendly, respectful environment.

The Essex show forms part of a series being held in the UK and in Europe, and each show will feature two categories, firstly DCI SoundSport followed by DCE Indoor Music Games. Both formats are aimed at encouraging new or former bands and corps to form/reform and in DCI SoundSport specifically there is no restriction on musical opportunities where any and all types of acts are encouraged to come along and entertain. All shows within this circuit are performed at indoor venues specifically set up to cater for this type of spectacle. Thurrock are particularly keen to provide a platform for alumni groups to get together and have a go.
Thurrock Marching Brass Chairman, Paul Morgan commented “Bringing the IMG SoundSport event to Essex, after a really enjoyable trip to the Forest of Dean earlier this year, means a great deal to us. We are very proud of not only our own borough, but our county as well, and in doing so we genuinely hope that we can ignite some really diverse interest in the show in the former heartland of Essex drum and bugle corps."   The venue is easily accessed with major road and rail transport links and has ample car parking. Further information on the Essex show can be provided by emailing info@thurrockmarchingbrass.org and registration is now open via the Drum Corps Europe website here

DCE focuses on video on demand

News dal sito DCE - Mer, 09/11/2016 - 11:05

Drum Corps Europe is fully committed to “video on demand” from this year onwards. The DVDs of the DCE Championships will be replaced by the online video platform with unlimited access to the DCE video archive.

The DCE Video Vault has rapidly risen in popularity in recent years, while DVD sales have fallen. With the Video Vault you not only have access to the DCE videos from this year, but those of previous years as well, on your computer, tablet and smartphone. And the cost is a fixed amount per year.

Due to the decreased DVD sales, the production costs of the DVDs have increased compared to revenues, and it has therefore been decided to stop releasing DVDs. DVDs of previous years are still available as usual.

An annual subscription to the DCE Video Vault costs just € 19.95. More information and previews of the videos can be found here

Hans Wansink and Marco Janssen are leaving DCE

News dal sito DCE - Lun, 07/11/2016 - 10:32

Board members Hans Wansink and Marco Janssen will be leaving the board of Drum Corps Europe. Both were active in the organisation for many years.

Marco Janssen was a co-founder of Drum Corps Europe in 2000 and has since been the secretary of the organisation. Hans Wansink joined the European drum corps organisation in 2004 as Finance Manager. Both have decided to leave to their drum corps career behind them. “With a family, my own business and DCE, it is becoming increasingly difficult to divide my time”, Janssen admits. “Now that the business requires more and more time, unfortunately I can't combine the two anymore. It pains me to say farewell, because DCE is an organisation with fantastic people, whom I have had an incredible amount of fun working with.”

“I am delighted to have had the privilege to be part of an organisation that has put the drum corps activity on the map again in Europe,” said board member Wansink. “Nevertheless, I think it is time to call it a day now, although I will still be busy finalising things for some time. I have always experienced the no-nonsense mentality within the board as very pleasant. This is one of the strong points of the organisation.”

The board of DCE would like to thank Hans and Marco for all the work and the time they have devoted to the organisation.

Juliana will run the Indoor Music Games Middelburg 2017

News dal sito DCE - Dom, 23/10/2016 - 23:01

Juliana from Middelburg will host the Dutch leg of the Indoor Music Games and SoundSport series next year, which will be held on Saturday the 22nd of April. The Corps will take over the organisation of the show from Drum Corps Europe.

The Indoor Music Games consist of a series of indoor events for performance ensembles, marching bands, show corps, indoor percussion groups and other ensembles. In cooperation with Drum Corps International and national partners in Europe, indoor events will be held in four countries between February and May.

Last year, the Indoor Music Games made its debut in Middelburg, and was co-hosted by Juliana and Drum Corps Europe. This time, the organisation is entirely in the hands of Juliana, with DCE providing the judging panel. “The cooperation was excellent last year,” said Edwin Baars from Juliana. “We received a lot of positive feedback from both participants and spectators after the event. So it was a successful test, which we will build on.” The Indoor Music Games will be combined with the now familiar presentation evening of the corps from Middelburg.

Drum Corps Europe are also pleased with the progress of the event. “The Indoor Music Games and SoundSport are a wonderful stage for indoor groups, new corps and smaller ensembles to present themselves to an audience,” explains IMG coordinator Andy Hewlett. “The emphasis is on entertainment, and in contrast to the summer season, the competition is less prominent. The collaboration with Juliana was excellent which is why we are very happy to return to Middelburg.”

Aside from the Dutch Indoor Music Games on Saturday the 22nd of April, there are also competitions in Dublin (Ireland – 18th February), Glasgow (Scotland, 25th March), Lydney (England – 8th April) and Essex (England - 6th May). Registration for all events commences on 1st November.

Concord and Tin Soldiers plan for IMG SoundSport 2017

News dal sito DCE - Dom, 09/10/2016 - 22:14

Preparations for the 2017 IMG SoundSport series are now well underway as bands and corps look towards next season. Concord Youth Music from Sheffield, South Yorkshire have announced their intention to enter the IMG section of The Forest of Dean show next year. The event, on Saturday 8th April, is located in a modern indoor arena on the outskirts of Lydney, Gloucestershire and will feature performances by a variety of different musical groups.

Sheffield will be sending a large group to the West Country, as Concord will be sharing their coach with the Tin Soldiers who will be entering the SoundSport section of the show. It will be a long day for this young group as they aim to leave Sheffield around 9.00 am and return to their Croft House headquarters by approximately 2.00 am on the Sunday morning. The show is timed to end at 8.00pm which should allow some time for socialising after the event, before heading back north.

Corps Director Roger Steele said “This is an opportunity for us to further our reputation and make a real impact in a new genre and with a brand-new audience, in addition to giving our members a totally different kind of performance experience.”

Contest Secretary Sharon Thomas said “We’re absolutely delighted that Concord and Tin Soldiers have decided to enter our show. The Forest of Dean is predominantly a Brass Band area but these two groups will bring a very different style of musical performance to the event, which I’m sure will prove very popular with the audience. We appreciate that it’s a long way from Yorkshire to Gloucestershire and we’re going to do everything we can to ensure that they have a great experience.”

Further information on the series will be published shortly on the DCE website and registration for all shows will open on November 1, also via the website.

A change to DCE news reports

News dal sito DCE - Sab, 08/10/2016 - 21:34

The way in which Drum Corps Europe reports on news is set to change. DCE will be putting a stronger focus on social media and instantly sharing drum corps news through Facebook and Twitter.

Since 2002, DCE has been posting drum corps related news items on its website, to share developments in our activity with as many fans as possible. In recent years, the growth of social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter has led to the natural progression of DCE playing a more active role there.

The DCE social media team will monitor developments and messages on social media and communicate news instantly with our followers. The DCE website, which is currently undergoing a redesign, will be used to post news about the Drum Corps Europe organisation itself.

The Company and Jong Jubal crowned DCE champions 2016

News dal sito DCE - Dom, 25/09/2016 - 21:54

The Company and Jong Jubal are the DCE European champions of 2016. Over 2,000 visitors were treated to 21 fantastic corps with a total of 33 show performances.

The Company was already in the lead in the Prelims. That lead was maintained in the evening. 'Inspire Me' was awarded 89.85 points by the judges. That was 0.9 points more than the number two, Jubal from Dordrecht. With 'The Next Ten Minutes', Jubal managed to excel particularly in visual, given the scores by the corps in the Visual captions.

The crowd in Kerkrade loves the Kidsgrove Scouts. This was confirmed again on Saturday, during and after the show 'Symmetricity'. The performance received a big ovation from the drum corps fans in the Parkstad Limburg Stadium. The corps won bronze with 87.00 points. 'Poisoned' by Juliana, the show that will always be known as 'the show with the trees', earned the corps a solid fourth place (82.50), followed by 'About Time' by the Starriders (80.60), who also won the caption award High Auxiliary.

With three corps, both England and Germany were the biggest 'suppliers' of finalists. Cadence managed to reach the Finals for the second year in a row after they entered the DCE arena for the first time last year, and finished ninth with 66.35 points. Besides Starriders, the three German corps making Finals included Wölper Löwen (seventh, 73.40) and Spirit of 52 (eighth, 71.50).

Both Italian participants also reached the ten highest placed corps in Europe. Unity came sixth with 78.85 points (their highest score and place ever) and Millennium made a successful comeback after several years’ absence (tenth, 63.95).

The 'Aqua' programme from Beeches was awarded 63.50 points by the judges, but unfortunately for Beeches this was just outside the top ten. But the corps is progressing well. This year they went up as many as eight places in the European ranking, from nineteenth to eleventh place. Revolution came twelfth, only 0.1 point below Beeches.

Calypso from Belgium is back and its programme 'Colours of Friendship' finished in thirteenth place (62.00). In the ranking of the European Music Games, the corps became fourteenth (out of a total of 28 participants). The Blue Diamonds scored 59.70 (twelfth of Ensemble Visual and eleventh for Visual Field). The Vikings (55.85, fifteenth place) excelled in Visual Effect where they became twelfth.

Jong Jubal took the European title in the Junior Class from Johan Friso. This is the eighth title for the junior corps from Dordrecht (81.55). No other corps has so many DCE titles to its name. Jong Beatrix came second (79.00), the highest position for the corps since 2009. Johan Friso had to take a step back in the final classification this year, but nonetheless managed to take home the bronze (75.50).

Jong-Holland Juniors, Diamond Cadets and Kadoudal made for an exciting international 'battle'. The scores were close together. The Jong-Holland Juniors came fourth (69.30). Less than one point behind were the Diamond Cadets (68.45), and Kadoudal came sixth (68.05) with a difference of only 0.4 points.

Not only in the stands but also at home, thousands of people enjoyed the performances. The scores and recaps are available on the scores page.

Live webcast of the DCE European Championships

News dal sito DCE - Gio, 22/09/2016 - 23:08

DCE will broadcast this year's Championships live on the internet. The webcast can be watched free of charge, however DCE hopes that fans will support the webcast by becoming a patron.

Nothing is better than being at the fantastic Parkstad Limburg Stadium and enjoying the music, show and atmosphere. However, the webcast offers an alternative for everyone who is unable to travel to Kerkrade. The show is hosted by Robby Overvliet and Michelle Vaughan. Analysts Joe Fitzpatrick and Paul Doop will give their views on the shows. The webcast will start Saturday at 9:30 (local time GMT+1) and can be accessed through a banner on the DCE website.

Drum corps fans who enjoy watching the event from their own home will be asked to become a patron of the 2016 webcast. “We know that the live webcast is highly appreciated, and with so many drum corps fans becoming a patron of the webcast we could keep it free last year", Rob Beeren from Drum Corps Europe said. "We hope that viewers will become a patron this year as well, so we can keep the webcast available to as many people as possible."

More information will be provided during the 14 hour webcast this Saturday.

Dates for the 2017 IMG SoundSport series announced

News dal sito DCE - Gio, 22/09/2016 - 17:20

Drum Corps Europe are pleased to announce the dates for the 2017 IMG SoundSport shows. Following a successful inaugural season last year, the series will again be held across four European countries and will feature two shows in England for the first time:

Sat 18.02.2017 Dublin, Ireland
Sat 25.03.2017 Glasgow, Scotland
Sat 08.04.2017 Forest of Dean, England
Sat 22.04.2017 The Netherlands (provisional)
Sat 06.05.2017 Essex, England

Each show will feature two categories, firstly DCI SoundSport followed by the DCE Indoor Music Games. Both formats are aimed at encouraging new or former bands and corps to form/reform and get involved in the activity, at a level that is more achievable at this point in time. It can also be used by groups who are going through a rebuilding process as the demands of this type of contest are less than that of normal marching band/drum corps competition.

All shows are held indoors in venues such as sports halls or gymnasiums, similar to those used for Winterguard events and feature just 3 judges. After performing all bands return to the arena at the end of the show where the results of both sections are announced. The season is held in the spring to allow groups who wish to go on and compete in the summer season to do so.

IMG/SoundSport Coordinator Andy Hewlett said "I'm pleased that we've been able to get the show dates agreed early for next year, as it gives potential competitors plenty of time to plan ahead. The 2016 series was a big success and I'm looking forward to building on that for next season"

Full details for all shows will be released shortly, but general information about the series is available from andy@drumcorpseurope.org.

Extra education audio files provided at DCE

News dal sito DCE - Mer, 21/09/2016 - 20:37

At this year's DCE Prelims two extra commentaries will be given to the corps. Marie Czapinski and Dave Cooksey have agreed to provide educational tapes (not judging tapes) to the participating units. They will look at the level of training, provide advise and give tips and tricks about how to improve the training of members.

Marie is co-founder of Winter Guard International, played a key rol in the formation and development of Bands of America and was DCI Visual Caption Coordinator for many years. She is well known for her clinic presentations, integrity and creativity. At this moment she is also a visual consultant to the Phantom Regiment.

Dave is active internationally as a music adjudicator and brass instructor. He has been a DCI judge and the last 16 years he has been brass instructor for Madison Scouts, Crossmen, Cavaliers and Phantom Regiment where he is currently low brass instructor. Dave is also the music educator for the DCE judging team.

The recordings will be put on the DCE Dashboard. Hopefully this will provide the instructors useful information which can help them plan the next season.

Drum Corps World team at DCE Championships

News dal sito DCE - Mer, 21/09/2016 - 02:19

Drum Corps World publisher Steve will be attending the DCE European Championship this Saturday in Kerkrade - The Netherlands. He will be writing reports on the event and two the American staff photographers, Richard Wersinger and Chris Maher, will be there to shoot along the sidelines.

"I am going to spend a few days ahead of the DCE Championships with my friend Steve Hars, former director of the Basildon Blue Eagles, then travel to Kerkrade on Friday", Vickers says, "I had such a fantastic time last September that I decided six years between visits was too much time to wait. Fortunately, I had enough frequent-flyer miles to arranged a roundtrip flight from Madison to London."

Vickers was quite impressed with every group, even the youngest and smallest. "Corps in North America made up of 12 to 16-year-olds weren’t nearly as solid ad all the ones I saw last year in Kerkrade. And I’m looking forward to seeing European representation in 2017 when Kidsgrove Scouts make another appearance at the DCA Championships and The Company competes at the DCI Championships in Indianapolis. Congratulations to every corps that will be participating in Kerkrade and I hope 2016 will be a great season for the entire roster!"

Jo Weerts is the new DCE contest director

News dal sito DCE - Mar, 20/09/2016 - 01:55

Jo Weerts is the new contest director for Drum Corps Europe and Drum Corps Netherlands. He succeeds Kees Kopmels, who stepped down last year after 15 seasons.

Weerts is no stranger to the drum corps world. For several years he has been the host of the DCN Championships, and together with Alan Thompson he is the announcer at the DCE Championships (Junior Class). "Because of my presenting work, I have become increasingly involved in the organisation and in what happens on the field in recent years,” Weerts says about his new appointment. “So it was a pretty logical step. I look forward to working with the guys on the field crew."

This Saturday, Jo Weerts will be on the field as the contest director at the DCE Championships in the Parkstad Limburg Stadium in Kerkrade. He will also be announcing the Junior Class again.
